General Dentistry

The prospect of a visit to the Dentist can be scary for many people. In fact, studies have shown that a fear of the Dentist is common with 1 in 4 of us dreading a visit! Usually this stems from a unhappy past dental experience.

Today, dentistry is different – LW Dental is a modern and patient-focused practice offering a warm and welcoming environment in which you can relax. We aim to make your experience as enjoyable and pleasant as possible. Our highly professional and friendly team of dentists, hygienists, therapists and nurses are all trained to offer our patients the latest treatments to the highest of standards. Relax knowing that you are in good hands and will be well looked after.

At LW Dental the oral health of yourself and your family is very important to us – in particular the education of children with regard to their oral care. Working with you, we hope to teach them about the importance of looking after their teeth. Our educational programmes and fun visits will help them to build a positive perception of the dentist and a good understanding of how to keep a healthy smile in adulthood.

Hygienist Care

Hygienist Care

The friendly and professional hygienists at LW Dental are here to scale and polish your teeth – removing harmful plaque and tartar and helping to ensure that you have healthy teeth and gums for life. They also advise you how to implement and maintain good oral health regimes at home so that your teeth continue to be disease free between visits.

Another good way to help reduce tooth decay is to reduce your sugar intake and aim to avoid too many sweets and fizzy drinks. Our hygienists will be happy to advise you about your diet if you have had to have fillings in the past.

Smile Makeovers

Smile Makeovers

Many people in the UK are unhappy with their teeth meaning that they can feel self-conscious when smiling, talking and eating. Likewise, they may actively avoid photos or particular social occasions because they feel embarrassed.

Don’t feel that the time to transform your smile has passed. Although generally seen as something for the younger generation, cosmetic dental treatments are not just for children and teenagers. In fact, modern dentistry means that suitable treatments are available for everyone regardless of age or the complexity of their requirements. The option of a white, bright and healthy smile is there for all of us.

Whether you have broken, missing, crooked or discoloured teeth, speak to us to find out what options are available. Anything is possible! More discreet, cost efficient, painless and less time-consuming than you may have imagined, treatments such as tooth straightening, whitening or the replacement of silver fillings with white ones are just some of the ways in which we could help you achieve the smile you’ve been dreaming of.

Please ask us for more information. At LW Dental it would be our pleasure to help you achieve the smile you deserve.

Cosmetic Bonding

Cosmetic Bonding

The stages of composite bonding:

Things to be aware of:

One of the most simple and least expensive cosmetic procedures, cosmetic bonding is an effective way to improve the appearance of any tooth which is decayed, chipped, broken and/or discoloured. It can also be used to lengthen teeth, as a white filling (a popular alternative to amalgam fillings) or to re-build and protect part of a tooth where there may be root exposure due to gum recession.

In cosmetic bonding a tooth coloured resin (composite) is attached directly to the tooth itself in order to re-build and restore it. The composite is shaped and polished to the correct shape and size until it matches your other teeth.

Unlike veneers which are manufactured off-site, bonding can be placed on your tooth in just one visit.

  • Your dentist will select the correct colour of composite resin to best match your other teeth by using a shade guide. The surface of your tooth will be slightly abraded to roughen it and a conditioning liquid will be applied to help the bonding material stick.

  • Following this, your dentist will apply the resin which will be moulded and smoothed into the desired shape and size. This will be hardened under an ultraviolet light and further trimmed and shaped if required. Lastly, the composite will be polished until it blends in with the rest of your teeth.

Although very durable, a composite resin is not as strong as your natural tooth. With proper maintenance, a composite bond should last for several years but remember that it can be damaged by fingernail biting or pen chewing!

A good oral hygiene routine is important in order to protect your composite bond. Brush your teeth twice a day and visit a dental hygienist for professional cleaning.

Certain food and drink items like tea, coffee and wine could all potentially stain the resin. Likewise, cigarette smoke can also discolour the resin.

White Fillings

White Fillings

Unfortunately not many of us will avoid the need for a filling at some point in our lifetime. In the past, silver amalgam fillings have traditionally been used, however with the desire for a more natural looking smile many people now choose white or tooth coloured fillings (sometimes called composite resin fillings).

More aesthetically pleasing, white fillings blend perfectly into your natural teeth meaning that no-one need even know they are there. In the past, tooth coloured fillings have been considered less strong than silver amalgam fillings but newer and stronger materials available today are now proving just as tough and hard-wearing.

It is possible to change any amalgam fillings for white ones. This is a quick and simple way of overhauling your mouth – enhancing your smile in just a few visits.

Teeth Whitening

Teeth Whitening

Whitening is a process where the tooth discolouration is ‘whitened’ to a lighter shade. It removes the staining agent through chemical means. It is a safe procedure when carried out under professional supervision. Treatment results usually depend on the severity of the discolouration. Both vital (i.e. live) and non-vital teeth (e.g. tooth with root removed) can be bleached and may take several visits to complete. It is not effective on dental restorations such as amalgam fillings, metal or porcelain crowns, etc.

Teeth can discolour for various reasons. The dentist will recommend the most ideal method based on your oral condition after an in-office examination to establish the cause and nature of your tooth discolouration, as well as provide you with more information on the various types of whitening procedures available, duration & frequency of treatment.

Sedation

Sedation

Intravenous sedation is a modern, effective, safe and predictable way to help reduce anxiety in patients and makes potentially more stressful procedures easier to manage.

Intravenous sedation is when a sedative drug (medicine) is given to you by injection into a vein. It is usually given in the arm or back of the hand through a cannula.

You will be sedated by a dentist trained in sedation who will be assisted by a sedation trained dental nurse.

Following treatment you will remain in the practice until you are assessed as ready to leave by the dentist. This may be up to one hour after your treatment is completed. It is normal to feel like resting once you get home.
